Ernest Schwiebert: “On Ethics and Philosophy Astream”

We celebrate the release of the revised edition of Ernest Schwiebert’s classic Matching the Hatch with an excerpt of “On Ethics and Philosophy Astream.” Matching the Hatch was originally published in 1955 and was recognized as a  ground-breaking look at fly imitation.  It set the standard for fly entomology and tying studies for the next several decades.  This lengthy excerpt frames Schwiebert’s philosophy on stream ethics—a philosophy that we often take for granted now but which in the mid-20th century was certainly at odds with general angling culture.
