Report: Fracking Wastewater the Cause of Minor Earthquakes
A series of 11 minor earthquakes in Ohio were “almost certainly” caused by the disposal of wastewater from fracking, says John Armbruster of Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. Last Friday the owner of the well agreed to stop injecting waste into the earth while state officals assessed the risk. However, even though the disposal will stop, the earthquakes may continue, according to Armbruster: “The earthquakes will trickle on as a kind of a cascading process once you’ve caused them to occur.” It is suspected that disposal of fracking wastewater may be the cause of earthquakes in Arkansas, Colorado, and Oklahoma, as well.
