Bling Midge: Simple, Elegant, Effective

“Bling midges are elegant yet easy-to-tie flies. With their lifelike appearance, they mimic midge pupae or larvae perfectly. These flies are also incredibly versatile, offering endless color combination possibilities. They tie up quickly. In fact, you can fill an entire fly box with 100-plus of these little guys in an afternoon.

In this video, I’m using a dry fly hook to keep them small and light. The thin wire of the dry fly hook helps achieve the slim profile of the body, but you can tie them on a nymph hook as well. They can be tied as small as size 28 (maybe even 30) but can also be scaled up to size 16 or 14 with thicker thread (like 240 denier) for a larger body. These midges work great as dropper flies behind a weighted nymph. Since they’re unweighted, they bounce naturally in the current, attracting fish while being easily dropped to where the fish are by a heavier lead fly.”
