Applying the 80/20 Rule of Finding Trout in a Trout Stream
“We set out to apply common nymphing applications in finding rainbow trout in this run. There’s an old saying that 80% of the trout in a trout stream are found in 20% of the water. In this video we share and show exactly how applicable that is! A 200m long run on a rainbow trout stream breaks down to common trout habitat, except the majority is unsuitable for trout. Dave works his way through the run, fly fishing all the subtle structure points and comes to find that the rainbow trout are indeed in 20% of the available water in this run. It’s a wonderful example of how paying attention to current conditions and knowing the species of trout you are targeting (rainbow trout) in order to know where to find them. And as Dave says at the end, once you see it over and over through the decades locating trout becomes somewhat predictable – even if catching them isn’t!”
