Originally important to help with erosion, Tamarisk trees are now consuming too much water from the Colorado River, say scientists. And some are looking towards Tamarisk beetles to help with eradicating the invasive tree species, and make room for native species to return. However, “There’s this sense that we’re looking for villains and someone to blame,” says journalist Melissa Sevigny. “The tough thing is to turn it around and look at ourselves as the ones who have taken too much from these landscapes.
