Canada Approves GM Salmon Eggs for Export
In a landmark decision, the first of its kind granting production of a genetically modified food animal, Canada has approved commercial production of GM salmon eggs by US biotechnology firm, AquaBounty Technologies Inc. The eggs will be exported from Prince Edward Island to a hatchery site in Panama, and will be for sale in the United States upon an expected FDA decision. At this development, fisheries biologists and conservationists express heightened concern over the threat GM salmon pose to wild Atlantic salmon. “It starts a chain of decisions that could be just disastrous for our aquatic ecosystems,” says Lucy Sharratt of the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network.
