Let Go of the Fly Rod? Never!!
The force of the water knocked down a 230-pound firefighter coming to his rescue, but fly fisher David Kelley refused to part ways with his new custom trout rod — after all, he just bought it.
“When Cipollo, a member of the Arbor Hill station rescue squad, arrived on the scene, the creek was mocha-colored and running fast, hard and high after snow melt. It was the first springlike day of the year, sunny with temperatures poking into the low 50s. According to witnesses, Kelley, who appeared to be middle-aged, was bent on testing out a new custom fly rod in advance of the April 1 start of trout season.” Paul Grondahl in the Albany, NY Times-Union.
