Podcast: "Iron Fly" Contest At Upcoming Denver IFTD Show

August 25, 2010 By: Marshall Cutchin

About a year ago tier and outfitter Ray Schmidt came up with the idea of an “Iron Chef” – like contest for fly tiers. With other AFFTA members, he put together the concept of the “Iron Fly,” the first timed tying competition of its kind, with the winner earning the title of the year’s “Iron Tier.” The event will take place at this fall’s IFTD show in Denver, which runs September 9-11 at the Colorado Convention Center.
Schmidt described the contest for us this morning:

In brief, competitors get 15 minutes to tie their fly of choice, but with a twist: they have to include the secret ingredient supplied by the judges. The fly for the final round (day 2) is a common pattern selected by committee and must be tied with a new secret ingredient.
Event sponsors include:Dyna-King, Renzetti, Peak, Cascade, Regal, Dr. Slick, Wapsi, Hareline, Spirit River, Rainey’s and UNI products.
There are still a few slots open for tiers. Contact Ray Schmidt at Schmidt Outfitters (231.848.4191) for more info.
