“Fly Fishing Moments: A Rising Rainbow Trout, Blue Winged Olives & Flying Ants”
“Mayfly hatches bring trout to rise to the surface. Fall blue-winged olive mayflies and mahogany dun mayflies are staple hatches that reliably rise rainbow trout. But it’s not always just mayflies that attract rainbow trout to eat dry flies – a terrestrial event like flying ants will often coincide with a mayfly hatch and it’s sometimes difficult to take notice because flying ants can be a size #20 or 22 fly. Because we don’t see such a small fly it is often easily dismissed as just a mayfly emerger eat when it is actually an ant eat.”
