Video Hatch: Attack of the Tabanos
Think you’ve seen biting bugs?
MidCurrent reader Kurt Iverson sent us this video yesterday, along with a note: “The next time you see an ad for a fishing vacation in Chile, and the sales pitch says ‘there are no biting insects in Chile,’ remember this clip. These bugs aren’t found in the more southerly Aysen (Coyhaique) region, but are a plague in the southern Lakes District near Puerto Montt, especially in the areas of the Rios Petrohue and Puelo. The flies are only around for about 3-4 weeks in January but represent probably the worst bug situation I’ve ever been subject to – including anything in Alaska or Canada.”
