Francis Lam’s excellent piece on the fishing culture of Bristol Bay, Alaska in Salon says that mines may bring an end to “America’s greatest fishery.”
“A marine biologist the miners hired said he doubted the mine could keep its toxins out of the water. ‘I couldn’t sleep after hearing that,’ he said, so the next day he flew his plane over the Pebble site, looking down at the mesh of land and water, and said, ‘That’s the heart of Bristol Bay. It’s where it all comes together.'”
