MidCurrent 2024 Fly Fishing Holiday Gift Guide

2024 was a fun year for new fly fishing gear. Looking back, it’s surprising just how much awesome product hit the market (including some fantastic new rods). The MidCurrent team has had the good fortune to get our hands on quite a lot of it, and that in-person experience informs the selections we made for the 2024 MidCurrent Holiday Gift Guide.

With prices continuing to climb, it might feel like a lot of fishing gear is out of reach for many of us, but there are plenty of budget-friendly options, too. In fact, I think you’re getting a better bang-for-your-buck now than in recent years. Regardless of what you’re looking for, or how much you want to spend, you’ll find something in this guide.

Grundens’ new Portal Gore-Tex Wading Jacket is designed to be the industry’s “smartest.”

Grundens Portal Gore-Tex Wading Jacket

Grundens bill their new Portal Gore-Tex Wading Jacket as the industry’s smartest, which is an interesting claim to make. Once you dig into the specs, though, it starts to make sense. The Portal is built to function in tandem with your waders, so it features a hand-warming pass-through pocket that allows you to access your wader pockets without removing the jacket. That’s especially handy when the wind is howling, or the rain’s coming down hard. And since it’s built with Gore-Tex, you can head out with confidence knowing you’ll stay dry.

From the manufacturer: “The award-winning Portal GORE-TEX Wading Jacket is designed to be the smartest wading jacket on the water by integrating over waders while performing in cold weather or deep wading scenarios. Feature dense, the Portal Jacket has pass-through handwarmer pockets to allow easy access to wader storage, shingled neoprene sleeve cuffs, a welded tippet pocket complete with laser cut holes to easily access tippet at a moment’s notice, and water-resistant fly box compatible chest storage pockets.”

A classic fishing shirt with modern features.

Poncho Performance Flannel Shirt

I’ve become a stickler for nice shirts, because I prefer to buy clothes that will last, instead of replacing them on a frequent basis. The Poncho Performance Flannel Shirt fits that bill (as do all their products) because it stands up to the abuse of long days on the water, and still looks great enough to wear to nice functions off the river. These are comfortable shirts (I own a few) and they’re light and breathable, two features that are a must for me.

From the manufacturer: “The Poncho journey started with a fishing shirt, but it has only just begun. We’re guided by an entirely new vision – simple gear that works. Made for people who love the outdoors. By a team of people based in Austin, Texas, who love the outdoors. Our performance flannel is medium weight, stretchy, and guaranteed to be the softest shirt you own. With styles and colors that everyone will love, we know these will become your go-to shirt on and off the water.”

TroutRoutes App

A big challenge anyone in fly fishing faces is finding a place to actually do it. That’s where TroutRoutes comes in. This app has information on trout streams in 48 states, along with USGS flow data, land ownership information, and access points. They’ve taken all the information that’s available in disparate locations online, and consolidated it so you don’t have to spend hours tracking down whether a new-to-you creek actually has fish.

From the manufacturer: “TroutRoutes is the ultimate trout stream mapping app, designed to elevate every adventure on the water. With comprehensive stream maps including USGS river flows, TroutRoutes makes it easy to discover new water and streamline your trip planning. Explore trout streams across the country with carefully curated data and custom tools, then take your research to the water with offline maps so you can navigate confidently, even without cell service. This holiday season, give the gift of exploration with a TroutRoutes PRO membership—perfect for any trout enthusiast looking to elevate their fishing tool kit.”

Bomber-style wading pants.

Grundens Kryall Pant

Finding a great pair of pants that work as both a layer for beneath your waders, or on their own in less-than-ideal conditions, isn’t as easy as it should be. Either they’re too heavy and not comfortable enough for hiking, or they’re too light to provide much warmth during bad weather. The Kryall Pant from Grundens aims to fill that gap. These pants are weather-resistant on their own, and also feature added mobility and stretch so you can confidently explore what’s around the next bend. They’ll work off the water, too.

From the manufacturer: “The Kryall Pant is a tough, wind and water-resistant layer designed to be versatile for wearability under a pair of Grundéns bibs, or as a standalone weather resistant pant. Designed with abrasion-resistant stretch woven fleece and water and stain-repelling treatment, the pant is ready to provide comfort and mobility. Completing the features of the pant are brushed fleece lined hand pockets, a drop-in rear pocket and secure zippered thigh storage pocket.”

Innovative lens technology.

Island Optics Mako XL Sunglasses

The Mako XL sunglasses from Island Optics prove you don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars for quality eyewear. Island Optics has been around since 1922, so they know a thing or two about making good sunglasses. The Mako XL shades feature an innovative polarized lens technology that allows for sharper colors, and it’s packed with moisture-wicking features to help the shades stay on your face even when it’s humid, or you get wet.

From the manufacturer: “Giving serious anglers the absolute best view into the water, the MAKO XL offers anglers a wide, full-coverage viewing area to see fully into the water while fishing. These frames are oversized and offer a much larger viewing area for all anglers to see more peripherally on the water while blocking out more light from the side, top and bottom. The Mako XL incorporate some of the best lenses you will find in polarized sunglasses for fishing today while also featuring several key design elements in the frame to keep your vision comfortable, clear and protected on long days peering into the depths. The Mako XL comes in three great color options at an incredibly low price of $98. When you factor in the quality of their innovative OX2 dual polarized lenses featuring hydrophobic, oleophobic and anti-reflective coatings for increased optical clarity and more vibrant colors, The Mako XL comes in three great color options at an incredibly low price of $98. Korkers Neo Flex Thermo Rubber Boots

Whether you’re looking for something to keep your feet warm while fishing in the drift boat, or just need a new boot for dealing with snow and ice this winter, the Korkers Neo Flex Thermo Rubber Boots are an awesome choice. These are fleece-lined rubber boots that are 100% waterproof and built with a bomber mid sole, so your feet won’t be upset if you wear these all day. On a personal note, I’ve loved this style of boot for a while now, and they’re more useful than you’d initially think.

From the manufacturer: “COZY, FLEECE-LINED COMFORT WITH 100% WATERPROOF, ALL-GRIP, NO-SLIP PERFORMANCE. All-winter utility for ice, muck, rain, snow or just being dang comfy. Most winter rubber boots are made with a hard rubber midsole, which leads to discomfort and pain after a long day crunching through the snow. Our Neo Flex Thermo™ winter boots are constructed using crazy comfortable Cush-Tech EVA which provides shock absorption and rejuvenating energy with every step. All-day comfort along with cozy fleece and waterproof protection make this the ultimate winter boot.”

A refreshed take on a timeless classic.

Vaer C5 Dirty Dozen Watch

The C5 Dirty Dozen from Vaer is their newest take on the military-inspired A12 Dirty Dozen field watch. This is powered by Ameriquartz, so it’s an exceptionally accurate timepiece, and it’s also ocean-proof. Vaer prides themselves on USA sourcing, and this watch is assembled entirely in America, as well. The C5 Dirty Dozen harkens back to the classic watches from WWII, built in 1939, but it’s still large enough to command a nice presence on any man’s wrist. This is a great option for not losing track of time on the river, and still looking a step above the rest while off the water, as well.

From the manufacturer: “Quite possibly the most famous military field watch of all time, the WW2 “Dirty Dozen” is an iconic collection of service watches from twelve historic Swiss brands. Compact, legible, and waterproof, this design was on the wrist of soldiers during the most decisive moments of the European campaign. Our version is an authentic homage to the 1940s design spec, borrowing elements from across the original lineup to create a fitting “13th model” to complement the core collection. The C5 Dirty Dozen blends classic design elements with modern technology. Priced at $299, they offer enthusiasts a robust, stylish, and affordable tool watch powered by an accurate and reliable USA-built FTS Ameriquartz movement. In addition to full USA assembly, the C5 Dirty Dozen boasts a 10ATM water resistance rating, and just like the original military versions, can handle the challenges of even the most extreme environments.”

A rod-and-reel combo at a great price.

Get to the fish with ease.

Water Master Fly Fishing Rafts

Fishing from a boat is arguably the most effective way to get fish in the net, but hauling a drift boat everywhere isn’t always practical. Heck, some waters just aren’t accessible from a drift boat. That’s where Water Master Fly Fishing Rafts can help. They have tons of options for anglers who want to access smaller lakes, bigger rivers, or even want a raft large enough for three people and a full frame. You’ll find something to help you get out on the water.

From the manufacturer: Water Master fly fishing rafts are a wonderful combination of portability, durability, performance, and ease of use. Brook Trout Classic Engraved Net

This handmade landing net is built in Pennsylvania by Tina Lewis. She actually drew the brook trout design you see on the handle, as well, and that design is then cut direclty into the wood. This makes for a durable, unique piece of gear that’ll stand out on the water. The net baskets are built with a teardrop shape to help you snag that big fish, and the rubber baskets are better on fish than uncoated fabrics.

Dry fly rods that are wonderful to cast.

Winston Pure 2 Rod

I’ve been a longtime fan of Winston rods, and the new Pure 2 is one of the company’s best. This is a dry fly rod designed for fishing, not lawn casting sessions. The team at Winston opted for unique length configurations, like a 7’9″ 4-weight and 8’3″ 5-weight. These shorter rods deliver tighter, more accurate loops, and are generally more pleasant to cast, in my opinion. Since dry fly fishing often requires fantastic accuracy, shortening the rods and tightening the loops helps these sticks become more effective tools. They’re absolutely wonderful to cast, and will quickly attain the cult status other rods from Winston enjoy.

The do-it-all fishing nipper.

Dr. Slick Mitten Scissor Clamp

The Mitten Scissor Clamp from Dr. Slick is hands-down my favorite fishing nipper. It combines forceps and nippers into one package, complete with a tool to clean out the eyes of your fly hooks, too. The attached cord is nice if you don’t already have a retractor setup. The jaws are serrated, so they can grip hooks to crush barbs. The jaws also have a smooth section for grabbing flies to remove them without damaging hackle or fragile materials. These nippers are about $25, too, which makes it easier to stomach when you eventually lose, or need to replace them.

USA-made reels for huge fish.

Old Mariner Offshore Standard Reel

If you want a USA-built reel that’s light, but powerful enough to wrangle tarpon, look no further than the Old Mariner Offshore Standard. Old Mariner reels are built in the same style as conventional trolling reels, with a double frame that supports both the spool and the reel bearings. That means you get a much stronger drag system than in a typical fly reel, and at a similar weight. Paul Conover, the man behind these reels, lives and fishes in Florida, and has years of design experience, including some with Nautilus.

Fantastic wet-wading pants.

Skwala Sol Wading Pants

I’ve always enjoyed my Skwala gear, but this was the first year I put their Sol Wading Pants to the test. They passed with flying colors. These light pants have a ton of movement built into them, so you can scramble over boulders or crawl into position for a tricky cast, without your movements being constricted at all. They dry quickly, and are surprisingly durable. I’m notoriously tough on pants, but I have yet to put a hole in either of the two pairs I own. They’re great for wet wading, but they’re also a great under waders, or even out to dinner after a long day on the water.

One of the market’s most unique hats.

Clark Fork LoPro Hat

Zach Otte is a former guide who’s now an artist, and he’s been all around the world. His trips to places like the Amazon and Himalayas have inspired his artwork, and you can really see that pop in his Clark Fork LoPro hat. The wonderful artwork, captured impressively in a patch, is unique in the fly fishing world. Most hats focus on funny or intricate designs, but I love Otte’s bright, happy colors here.
