In August 2014, an expedition is being planned that will be more than just a fishing trip. Participants will be part of a group with a mission to “land, tag and release adult tarpon that migrate annually to the world-renowned Long Key area,” and increase research on movement and migration.

Help answer the “$64,000 Question” — Are our fish, their fish?

This is a rare opportunity for folks who dream of being a Marine Biologist for a day and playing a significant role in the effort to protect and understand global tarpon populations. This is a chance to actually help answer the “$64,000 Question” — Are our fish, their fish? In August of 2014, in northern Belize, here is a completely unique opportunity to become an elite member of the expedition team that will help unlock the answers to the global tarpon migration code.

The 2014 the expedition will be armed with the most technologically advanced PAT & SPOT satellite tags. The goal of the expedition is to land, tag and release adult tarpon that migrate annually to the world-renowned Long Key area. After tagged tarpon are successfully released, these efforts will enable scientists from the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science to study global movements, habitat and behavior of the fish. This data will ultimately be used to assist fisheries managers, anglers and government officials from around the globe to make even more intelligent decisions about how to properly manage tarpon populations.

The legendary Stu Apte; author, tarpon master, guide to a US President, retired PAN AM 747 First Officer, holder of over 44 World Records and inductee of the IGFA, Fishing Hall of Fame will help lead the first week of the expedition.

This entire expedition has been designed to enable research and increase participants understanding of tarpon for a lifetime. Expeditioners should plan on returning home from this trip with more than just their fair share of daydreams and hero shots. When the boats return to the dock, anglers can participate in workshops and seminars offered to enhance skills and knowledge about the fascinating world of the tarpon. Between “Rocket Science On The Flats”, successful fishing techniques and “how to” sessions, people won’t be wondering if they have the right fly or a good knot next time it’s their shot at a tarpon at 80-feet moving, left to right.

This is completely unique opportunity to actively participate in the effort to advance science while mixing it up with the living legend of the sport of tarpon fishing. Expedition dates are August 9-16 & 16-23, 2014.
