How to Tie a Clouser Minnow

Producer: Tim Flagler  |  Tightline Productions

Here’s a saltwater version of Bob Clouser’s famed Clouser Minnow tied in olive and white with just a hint of gold for flash.  Says tier Tim Flagler: “I’ve found the Mustad 34007 in size 2/0 works exceptionally well for most inshore and near shore fly fishing situations. It’s a good all-around choice.”

    Thanks, Tim.
Great proportions. I’m glad I took the time to see your method for the Clouser. There are always things to learn from the best. I don’t hit the salt without Clousers.– Especially if I am going for speckled trout. I like green and white. orange and tan, pink and white, also.

Nympher, or do you prefer Maniac?
Anyway, a friend broke out a clouser while we were weakfishing (NJ equivalent of specks) a couple of years back. The thing had a black back, orange belly and a chartreuse middle with just a hint of gold Krystal Flash thrown in for good measure. Don’t worry, the thing looked even worse than it sounds. I nearly laughed him off the boat. Then he proceeded to out fish me 4 to 1. No kidding, they’re worth a try.

Either way. I’m the maniac pushing nymph fishing over dries. That lookss like a cool color combo, and I’ll give it a try for sure. Thanks for that. If you throw a blue middle in, the redfish will respond to the crab claw color. So many possibilities, so little time.

Great job–thanks for detailing the basics–this is the reason I refer the members of my fly tying classes to the Midcurrent web site.
