World’s Best Tiers at N.J. Fly Tying Symposium Nov. 21-22

SOMERSET, NJ – Fly tiers from around the globe will demonstrate their artistic use of fur and feathers, tinsel and braid to create artificial fishing flies at the 25th Anniversary Edition of the International Fly Tying Symposium, Nov. 21-22 at the Garden State Exhibit Center, 50 Atrium Dr., Somerset.

Admission to the pre-Thanksgiving event is $15 on Sat., $12 on Sun. or $22 for both days. Symposium hours are 9-5 on Sat.; 9-4:30 on Sun. Parking is free.

With a theme of “Happy Silver Anniversary,” professional fly tiers who will demonstrate their craft at the event include:

  • Gary Borger;
  • Enrico Puglisi;
  • Bob Clouser;
  • Charlie Craven;
  • Hans van Klinken;
  • Marc Petitjean; and
  • Bob Popovics.

A new wrinkle for the Silver Anniversary Symposium will be a free “One Eye-One Fly” competition. Tiers will test their creative tying in the entrance lobby and foyer at 4 p.m. on Sat. All the vises, tools, hooks, and materials will be set-up for those wishing to compete. Judges will be selected from among the celebrity tiers. “Just tie your best pattern, and win a Regal Vise. All tiers get to keep the materials, about a $50-$60 value,” said show director Chuck Furimsky.

Information about advanced registration for the “One Eye-One Fly” competition is available at the International Fly Tying Symposium website: http://www.internationalflytyingsymposium.com/

A casting pond will be available continuously for rod testing and demonstrations.

Morning fly tying classes offer an opportunity to learn new techniques, styles and patterns taught by the show’s featured tiers. These are limited in size and have a required pre-show registration and fee. Class registration and availability information is on the show website.

All the symposium seminars, casting demos, author’s booth, mini-pond demos, and Featured Fly Tier are all included in the admission price. “In all, we anticipate a potpourri of more than 100 fly tiers demonstrating trout, bass, saltwater, and upwards of 2,000 assorted artificial fly patterns,” said Furimsky.

Additional recognized tiers will be announced closer to the Symposium date after personal calendars are cleared.

The Sat. night banquet will feature the piano of Joe Augustine, a Steinway Artist since 1994. Classically trained, Augustine has been performing and teaching jazz piano nationally and abroad for 40-plus years. He is described as “a master at creating meticulous, distinctive arrangements so that his listeners hear the music in exciting new ways.” Augustine draws on his own experience as pianist, composer and arranger to create just the right blend of melody, harmony and rhythm.

Discounted lodging for the event is available at the adjacent Doubletree Hotel. For special lodging rates, phone (732) 469-2600 and mention the Symposium.
