Tying the Michigan Wiggler
Producer: Dressed Irons
The Michigan Wiggler is one of the most productive steelhead nymphs to come out of the Great Lakes region. Originally designed for winter steelhead fishing in Michigan’s rivers, this bushy, heavily weighted nymph has earned a reputation as a go-to pattern when cold water pushes fish to the bottom. Its simplicity and versatility have made it a staple in fly boxes across the Midwest and beyond.
It’s a non-descript, buggy-looking nymph that doesn’t try to be an exact imitation of anything in particular—and that’s precisely why it works. The chenille body and palmered hackle give it a lifelike presence in the water, while the squirrel-tail shellback adds a natural profile that trout and steelhead can’t resist. Heavily weighted with lead-free wire, it sinks quickly to get into the strike zone where cold-weather fish hold tight to the bottom.
Despite its origins as a steelhead fly, the Michigan Wiggler is equally at home on trout streams and anywhere you need a chunky nymph bouncing along the riverbed. Tie it in natural earth tones for a subtle presentation, or go bold with chartreuse, purple, or pink to stand out in stained water. It’s a quick tie, hard to mess up, and devastatingly effective—proof that the buggier the fly, the better it fishes.
