Art: Rubbing Fish the Right Way
In Canada’s Globe and Mail, Mark Hume highlights the work of B.C. resident Mya DeRyan, who practices the unusual art of fish rubbings — with a twist: “She doesn’t just use ink, but has developed other experimental mediums that reflect light, the way the skin of a fish does when it is wet. She has become so well known in the sports angling community that frozen fish now routinely arrive in Kaslo from all over the world, destined for Ms. DeRyan’s studio.” DeRyan’s Gyotaku fish prints are quite inventive in their composition (see the “Coho Salmon and Pilchard” that is featured on the bottom of her Salt Water Sport Fish page).
