Tying Furled Flies Wins Outdoor Award
On Sunday, April 19, 2009, Ken Hanley received the first-place award in the book category for Tying Furled Flies at the Outdoor Writers Association of California (OWAC) meeting in Fairfield, California.
Furling, the innovative and versatile technique of twisting materials together to form bodies (and other parts) on flies, allows tiers to create durable and effective imitations of the important foods that trout, bass, and steelhead feed on. Author Les Johnson writes, “A clear, concise book on furled-bodied fly-tying techniques has been needed for years . . . you’ll want this volume close to your fly-tying table.”
With over 500 color photos and detailed step by step photography for 20 patterns, Hanley covers some of the common trout stream bugs such as mayflies, caddis, and stoneflies, as well as pygmy grasshoppers and dragonflies, with writing that Marshall Cutchin of Midcurrent.com says is “clear and informative” and photos he describes as “top-notch.” Hanley presents new information about the foods trout eat and describes creative options for imitating them, offering field-tested approaches for fishing his patterns using both standard presentations and more radical strategies.
Founded in 1986, OWAC is a non-profit organization of professional outdoor communicators from California and surrounding western states that reach an audience of nearly 20 million readers, listeners and viewers in the largest outdoor market in America.
A 2005 inductee into the Northern California Council Federation of Fly Fishers Fly Fishing Hall of Fame, Ken Hanley is the author of six books and has been featured in two instructional DVDs. He also writes and photographs for national and regional publications in the outdoor industry. He lives in Fremont, California.
