Jerry Neal films guide Iolanthe “IO” Culjak fly fishing at Moraine Park in Rocky Mountain National Park.
I love RMNP and try to get out there about this time every other year or so.
Anyone who has been subjected to Io’s rants about the “boy’s club” and how its patriarchal attitudes are oppressing her will find it amusing to see her on the interwebs, casting entirely from her wrist and reaching in front of her rod hand to strip line. Hmm. I’m sure it’s all still somehow about gender, not skills.
And where is the sweet dry fly footage? You go to the UBT at the peak of the dry fly season and every fish is stuck on (apparently barbed) nymphs?
Beautiful footage. Should be used as a Colorado tourism or Coors beer ad or something.
The elk drinking from the stream is simply magical.
I live in Colorado and have fly fished the east side of the Rocky Mountain National Park where this was filmed (Moraine Park) as well as the west side (upper headwaters of the Colorado River and its tributaries) and seeing elk that close is amazingly frequent.
RMNP is hugely untapped by fishermen. Most visitors in the park are not fly fishers. This is largely due to the fact that you will not catch huge fish there.
One fly fishes RMNP because of the total experience as was captured in this video clip. Fly fishing a small stream within a stones throw of elk and moose is surreal. They don’t stock the park and so the fish are all native.
Very nice video.
