Fly Fishing Hatches: “Skwala Stonefly Mania”

Producer: Jensen Fly Fishing

“Skwala stoneflies are one of the North American west’s first “big bug” hatches of the year. Wiggling & fluttering size #8 stoneflies on often low & clear, pre-runoff conditions certainly brings trout to the surface and some excellent early season dry fly fishing occurs. In this video we hit low flows and clear water during a light skwala stonefly egg laying event. The browns are cruising rapidly as they swim and search for the few skwala stoneflies on the surface. The eats are voracious and the brown trout are nowhere near their rises afterward. This day became a serious challenge to spot, communicate, cast and film the absolute manic chaos of trying to hunt the next brown trout on rod and camera.”
