Destination: Abaco

Producer: Simms Fishing

The Bahamas is one country, but it comprises more than 700 islands and cays, which means that there is a wide diversity of geography and fishing opportunities. The new film  Destination: Abaco details the incredible sight-fishing for bonefish and permit around Abaco Island. What makes Abaco particularly special is the remarkable variety of fishing environments within a relatively small area: from hard-packed white sand flats and mangrove-fringed cays to turtle grass basins that attract large schools of fish. Unlike more heavily pressured destinations, Abaco’s flats still offer genuine solitude, where it’s possible to spend an entire day without seeing another skiff.

But the draw of Abaco goes beyond the fishing. The bonefish itself is deeply rooted in the Bahamian culture, and local guides serve as the keepers of this tradition. These folks are not just experts, but they’re also storytellers, stewards of the flats, and keepers of a way of life that’s been passed down for generations.
