Starting Out: Flash as Attraction

The silvery sheen on a baitfish’s flank is not a beacon. It’s camouflage. A structural adaptation evolved to make the fish reflect ambient light in a way that matches the surrounding water, not the kind of single-angle glint that would mark its position to something hunting it. A school of herring swimming in formation is harder to pick out than the shimmering school image suggests. The shimmer is a byproduct. The disappearance is the point.

The practical implication sits close to the inverse of the beginner’s instinct. A fly built with heavy, continuous flash produces a signal that does not correspond to anything in the predator’s experience of real prey. The fly is visible, but visible in a way that healthy baitfish specifically do not do. A fly built with sparse flash, positioned to catch light at the moments the fly changes direction or speed, the turn of a strip, the start of a pause, the moment the jig falls off the retrieve, produces something much closer to the actual signature of a vulnerable fish.

This does not mean flash should be minimal in every saltwater application. In stained water or low light, visibility is the primary problem. Subtlety is wasted on a fish that can barely see the fly.
