The most important piece of summer trout gear you own costs about twelve dollars, has no battery, and spends most of its life clipped to a zinger you can easily forget is there. A stream thermometer won’t help you cast farther or fool a pickier fish. It tells you one number — the temperature of the water you’re standing in — and that number decides whether the trout you release swims off to feed again or dies an hour later, out of sight, where you’ll never know it happened. In July and August, that makes it the one tool that should override the hatch you drove four hours for, the float you booked in spring, and the new rod you’ve been itching to bend.

Most of us treat it as an afterthought, a stocking-stuffer accessory somewhere between floatant and a hook sharpener. That’s backward. For three months a year it’s the instrument that tells you whether you’re fishing or quietly doing harm, and almost nobody fishes it the way they should.
