Stop Casting from “No Man’s Land”

Do you start and finish your fly fishing cast with the rod at waist level, parallel to the water? I call this position “no man’s land,” and it causes several problems in your fly casting. In this video I explain why starting and ending your cast with the rod tip down near the water creates better habits and improves casting efficiency. Pulling the rod tip down after the forward cast does not pull the fly down to the target like many anglers think. Instead, it widens your loop, slows down line speed, and reduces accuracy. Starting the cast at waist level also makes it harder to pick up longer lengths of fly line, which often leads to poor back casts and inefficient forward casts. This becomes a bigger issue when fishing situations require quick pickups and fast recasts, especially in saltwater sight fishing.
