January trout days rarely end because the fish “shut off.” More often, they end because your gear does.
You’re standing in that blue winter light, snow squeaking under your boots, the river steaming like it’s trying to stay alive. The first few casts feel normal. Then the line starts to drag. The shoot dies. You glance at the tip-top and see a perfect little donut of ice inside the ring. Two guides down, the snakes are frosting over. Your reel handle feels stiff, like it’s packed with sugar.
