First Look: The New Orvis Ratio Fly Reel

Orvis has introduced the Ratio Fly Reel as its highest-performing saltwater reel to date, aimed at anglers targeting tarpon, roosterfish, permit, tuna, and billfish. According to Orvis, the Ratio centers on a fully sealed carbon-stainless drag system engineered for smooth engagement, zero startup inertia, and 12 to 20 pounds of stopping power, depending on size.

The drag system is protected by multifaceted O-ring sealing to keep out salt and debris. An oversized, indexed drag knob is designed to allow precise adjustments under load. The reel also features a 5/16-inch oversized shaft and integrated line guard for added strength and reliability.

The Ratio is available in five sizes: III, IV, V, VI Shallow, and VI Deep. The VI models include both deep and shallow spool options. Orvis notes the deep spool will accommodate a 14-weight line with up to 600 yards of backing. Color options include Blackout, Gold, and Silver/Deep Sea. MSRP is $498 for the Ratio III, $549 for the IV, $598 for the V, and $649 for the VI models.

First Impressions

I have had the Ratio IV, paired with the New Recon rod, on the water, but so far only for cold-season warmwater species. With water temperatures down, the fish are not making the long, blistering runs this reel was designed to handle. Even so, it has given me a solid early sense of how the drag engages and how the reel feels under light to moderate load.

The fit and finish stand out right away. The frame and spool tolerances are tight, with no noticeable play. The machining is clean and consistent throughout. It feels solid and well built.

The drag is the defining feature. From a dead pull, it engages immediately and smoothly. There is no hesitation at startup. As pressure increases, it builds in a steady, controlled progression. Even without testing it against true big-game species yet, the upper end feels substantial. There is clear stopping power available.

The oversized, indexed drag knob is easy to grip and simple to adjust. The clicks are defined, and small changes feel precise and repeatable. The feedback is clear when making adjustments on the fly.

The 5/16-inch shaft and overall frame design give the reel a confident feel in hand. The fully sealed drag system should prove reliable, even in demanding circumstances.

I am also partial to the champagne gold finish. Classic saltwater reels have long worn that color well, and the Ratio continues that tradition. It looks timeless and appropriate for the fisheries it targets. Blackout and Silver/Deep Sea offer additional color options, but the gold is my favorite.

At this stage, the impressions are very positive. The fit and finish are excellent. The drag engagement is smooth and controlled, with serious power available when needed. I look forward to fishing the Ratio in warmer water and heavier scenarios this season and will follow up with a full review after more time on the water.
