Kyle Schaefer | Coastal Maine
Capt. Kyle Schaefer, owner of Soul Fly Outfitters, is based in Kittery, Maine along the southern border of the state. He finds his purpose guiding clients to Striped Bass and teaching the intricacies of fly fishing. In a typical day with Kyle you’ll pole the shallow mud and sand flats hunting for striped bass in water sometimes less than a foot deep. Stalking striped bass on the flats is challenging, requires teamwork, and can be incredibly rewarding. When Capt. Kyle isn’t poling his skiff in shallow water he can be found guiding clients through vast interconnected estuaries and the endless rocky structure found along the coast of his home waters. The rugged granite coastline is a unique element where Kyle utilizes a trolling motor to get in tight to the rocks where delivering big streamers into the breaking waves is the name of the game. From the end of May until late October stripers are the main event in Vacationland.
Capt. Kyle is on board of the American Saltwater Guides Association representing the state of Maine where he helps promote long term marine conservation. Kyle is also an ambassador for Thomas & Thomas fly rods and the American Museum of Fly Fishing. Each year Kyle spends an increasing amount of time helping to protect our fisheries through writing, advocacy and increasing awareness of important issues. When the striped bass migrate south for the winter so does Kyle. From October to June Kyle and his wife Kitri can be found managing Bair’s Lodge, a bonefishing operation located on the fabled island of South Andros in the Bahamas. Throughout the year Kyle passionately hones his craft as a flats angler, guide, conservationist and teacher.
