Gear Review: Yakoda Fly Club by Yakoda Supply

September 18, 2025 By: Rick Mikesell

Before the days of online shopping, mail order felt a little bit like magic. I remember scanning the backs of punk-rock ‘zines, filling out a money order, and sending it to some exotic address in New Jersey or southern California. Weeks or months later, after I had nearly forgotten about it, an envelope would show up on my porch. Inside was the record that may have become my new favorite. That moment of surprise and discovery is rare today. Most things arrive in two days, tracked the whole way. Subscription services are about as close as we come now to that same sense of anticipation, and Yakoda shares that feeling with anglers in their Fly Club.

How It Works

Membership in the Yakoda Fly Club keeps your boxes stocked year-round. Each shipment includes a curated selection of Yakoda patterns alongside high quality Montana Fly Co flies, packaged with Yakoda’s trademark branding and design. In a world where there are so many online fly shops selling cheap flies that fall apart after a few uses, it is refreshing to see the durability and attention to detail Yakoda and MFC put into these patterns. Members also receive a discount code that works any time, early access to sales, exclusive products, and opportunities to join events and trips. Shipments include digital content that explains the patterns and how to fish them, a useful tool for anglers of all skill levels. A portion of membership supports Yakoda’s 1% for the Planet partners.

Yakoda Supply is based in Louisville, Colorado, and has built a reputation for American-made packs, bags, and apparel, along with quality tying and streamside tools. Their branding has become a hallmark of youthful design in fly fishing, with clean lines and graphics that stand out in the industry.

Tearing Open the Package

My first shipment of flies arrived in a slim metal tin with two very cool Yakoda stickers. The branding was strong and clean in true Yakoda form. Inside were twenty trout flies: a mix of dries, nymphs, terrestrials, euro-style jigs, as well as a pair of small streamers. The assortment leaned heavily toward Western trout fishing, and while not hatch-specific, it provided a versatile foundation for summer outings. Highlights included a Chubby Chernobyl, a Royal Wulff, a pair of CDC Stoneflies, and several Yakoda signature patterns.

My favorite of the bunch was the Funky P. I fished it as a dropper under a Royal Wulff on a small South Platte tributary, and creek browns consistently chose the nymph over the dry. That evening highlighted Yakoda’s approach of taking proven tying platforms and adding thoughtful twists, whether through CDC collars, flash, or subtle color changes.

The Second Shipment

The following quarter brought another shipment, this time in a branded cardboard sleeve meant to refill the original tin. The assortment shifted toward early fall with an olive Woolly Bugger, an orange Elk-Hair Caddis, and several variations of Pheasant Tails and emergers. The stand-out pattern was the Yakoda H2 Flashback, a jigged nymph with a soft hackle collar that promises to fish equally well dead-drifted or swung.

Each box includes a QR code linking to detailed notes on the patterns, when to fish them, and how to rig them. This feature adds real value for newer anglers who want to build confidence in fly selection, while still offering unique twists that appeal to more experienced anglers.

Whom is it For?

The Yakoda Fly Club makes a strong gift option for the angler who already has everything, especially with the holidays approaching. Any trout fisherman will appreciate opening a box of fresh, high-quality flies, some familiar and some unique to Yakoda. Beginners will benefit from the instruction that comes with each batch, while seasoned anglers will find value in exploring creative variations not found in most shop bins.

For those without a reliable local fly shop, the subscription offers a dependable way to keep boxes full of durable, proven patterns. And for anglers who simply want variety or a steady flow of inspiration, it is a satisfying way to stay engaged through the season.

Limitations

The assortments are random and lean heavily toward Rocky Mountain trout. They cover a wide range of general western situations, but when fish key on a specific hatch or food source, you will still need to supplement with local patterns. Anglers outside the Rockies may also find the selections less relevant, and warmwater, stillwater, or saltwater anglers will not see much value here.

Membership Options

Yakoda offers three tiers of membership. The Quarterly Club delivers twenty flies each season with a slim tin and a 15 percent year-round discount. Monthly options provide either six flies with a 20 percent discount or three flies with a 10 percent discount. All include write-ups and digital content.

Join the Club

The Yakoda Fly Club is high-quality flies paired with a bit of a revival of the mail-order surprise. It is a great way for trout anglers to discover new patterns, test unique variations, and stock up on proven staples. Beginners will find both quality flies and the instruction needed to learn how to fish them, while experienced anglers can enjoy adding something fresh to their boxes. As a gift idea, it delivers the rare moment of opening something that feels both unexpected and useful, which is harder to come by in our era of instant shipping.
