ABEL ‘CLASSIC’ EMULATES TRADITIONAL SPEY REELS
October 10, 2012, CAMARILLO, Calif. – If everything old is new again, Abel’s 2013 Classic model reel for 4-, 5- and 6-weight flylines should be Number One on the Hit Parade.
Designed for the modern trout angler, but with the appearance and feel of a generations’ old Spey reel, the new 5.9-ounce Classic has been engineered with an externally adjustable click/pawl drag and line over-run system; it’s available in either a vented (open) or solid spool. Classic reels are anodized using Abel’s proprietary method for both fresh and light saltwater use.
Frames and spools are made from cold-rolled 6061-T650 aircraft-grade aluminum. Cold rolling occurs with the metal below its recrystallization temperature (usually at room temperature), which increases the strength via strain hardening up to 20%. It also improves the surface finish and holds tighter tolerances.
The Classic holds a 4-weight line with 200 yards of 20-pound backing, a 5-weight with 175 yards and a 6-weight with 150 yards.
In addition to field tests in a variety of freshwater applications from Alaska to upstate New York, the Classic was used extensively in the salt of Washington’s Puget Sound for sea-run cutthroat trout.
Abel Classic reels are $450; extra spools $225.
