Cheeky Fly Fishing Debuts the Mojo 425

June 3, 2011 By: Alex Cerveniak

Cheeky Fly Fishing is a new fly reel manufacturing company based in Boston, MA. Their debut product, the Mojo 425, is a fly reel Cheeky says is “the ultimate all-around saltwater reel and the ideal weapon for big game freshwater excursions.”

The Mojo 425 took over two years to develop—a collaboration of aerospace engineers, graphic designers from the ski industry, and more than 40 fly fishing guides from across the country. The components are fully machined from 6061-T6 aluminum and titanium billet in a facility just outside of the company’s headquarters in Boston. Each drag plate is individually cut using electrical discharge machining technology.

The company’s proprietary KarbonEVO drag system is fully sealed by aerospace-grade O-rings. It uses a carbon fiber weave, a titanium shaft, and ceramic bearing to reduce start-up inertia and provide big-fish stopping power. The drag design also includes an easily removable clicker plate for anglers who prefer a more stealthy approach and an oversized drag knob.

What really sets the Mojo 425 apart from other fly reels, the company says, is its MAX arbor and strength-to-weight ratio. The reel underwent months of real-world stress testing and modeling to determine the points on the reel which undergo the most strain. Those points were reinforced without eliminating aluminum, and without sacrificing strength, all while maintaining a light, 7.3-ounce weight and preserving the reel’s massive 4.25-inch diameter—pushing the limits of arbor size.

The Mojo 425 also features a unique backing channel which provides anglers with 30 percent more backing capacity than other reels in its class.

The Mojo 425 is rated for 6 through 10-weight fly lines and has an MSRP of $690. Spare spools are available and have an MSRP of $340.
