The latest results of Southwick Associates‘ angler survey are out, and they show some interesting facts about what fly fishers are buying.
Of anglers who reported buying fly fishing gear this year, most (56%) bought flies, 32% bought leaders and tippets, 30% bought fly tying material, and 22% bought a fly line. Interestingly only 4.9% bought a vest, pack or bag.
Of anglers who reported buying flies this year, most (27.9%) bought nymphs (take that, Halford!), 25.3% bought dry flies, and 16.8% bought streamers or buggers.
In general, the type of product most purchased was fly tying material (48%), and the top brand for that material was Orvis (26%).
The survey also reports that most purchases —39% — are still begin made at local shops.
