Tom offers five tips on getting access to rivers and shorelines and, along the way, brings up some of the legal and ethical questions that we’re still trying to sort out at the state level.
“Tip number one is the most important, and it is to know the riparian and littoral access laws of your own particular state. ‘Riparian easement’ refers to access to flowing waters, and ‘littoral access’ is usually used to describe access to shoreline areas, either on large lakes or on the ocean. Very early on in the founding of our country in the Constitution, it was very clear that the founding fathers wanted all moving waters to be held in trust by the state by the use of all the people.”
