In the London Times, Brian Clarke offers a well-written take on why creating “smudges of light and color” are actually what we aim for when tying trout flies. “Refraction distorts the trout’s view of its world, as well. Just as it can prevent us looking down through the surface completely, refraction can prevent a trout looking up through it, even by a tiny amount.”
