Scanning Redside Trout Health

June 7, 2006 By: Marshall Cutchin

McKenzie River fishing guides are beginning to use innovative implants to track populations of native trout. Once fish are tagged with Passive Integrated Transponders, they can be scanned by hand-held readers. “The purpose of the project is to learn more about the health and habits of the McKenzie’s native fish populations, especially the “redsides” (rainbow trout) that made the McKenzie famous among Western anglers during the first half of the 20th century.” Mike Stahlberg in the Oregon Register-Guard.
