I use a lot of mono loops in salt water and fresh water streamer fishing. Also, your suggestion of using this knot for nymphs is great.
A variation on this knot is to wrap the tag end around up the line three times and back down the line three times before inserting the tag end back through the overhand loop. It makes a more compact knot.
