How to Tie the Prince Nymph Jig

Producer: Tim Flagler  |  tim-flagler

The Prince Nymph Jig is a new twist on an old favorite. It’s basically a Prince Nymph tied on a jig hook with a slotted bead and a few minor modifications. Here, US Youth Fly Fishing Team member and Pennsylvania fly fisherman Doug Freemann is going to tie one on a Hanak H400BL size 14 competition jig hook.

Sorry lead wire is used to weight the fly instead of non-toxic.

What do the white biots represent if they are on the bottom of the fly?

When a natural insect drifts downstream, swept from its home between the rocks by the current, do you really think it rides only right side up as it goes? I could be wrong but I think trout are well accustomed to seeing natural nymphs in all sorts of orientations, right side up, upside down, tail first. We are the ones who are locked into a single view because of how our hook is secured in our tying vise.

As far as the lead wire goes, I will certainly give Doug a stern talking to next time I see him.
