How to Tie an Ausable Wulff

Producer: Tim Flagler

Tim Flagler ties the venerable Ausable Wulff, a pattern developed by upper New York state fly fishing guru Fran Betters in 1964.

Fran’s wife Jan once said her husband would tie “somewhere between 25,000 and 30,000 flies a year.  He tied between 150 and 200 a day during the season. He could tie a complicated Ausable Wulff in three minutes.”

The Ausable Wulff was designed specially for the boulder-strewn, tumbling streams of Betters’s home waters.   It imitates a range of insect species and floats extremely well in fast, broken water.
