Congratulations to James Prosek. It took a talented young American to make a movie about Walton and the early British Angling that helped kickstart much of the fishing that many worldwide know and practice today. I rather fear that a Brit could never have made the thing, after reading in the British national press this week that the recent captor of a record (70-pound) English carp has received death and rape threats to himself and his family via social media from other disgruntled, envious fishers (I cannot call them ‘Anglers’).

Old Izaak’s line – “We may say of angling as Dr. Boteler said of strawberries: “Doubtless
God could have made a better berry, but doubtless God never did”; and
so, if I might be judge, God never did make a more calm, quiet, innocent
recreation than angling.” – has clearly been lost in translation by some of our number in the many years since he first wrote it.
