Silver Kings to Join 2016 Belize Tarpon Tagging Expedition Team

The crew of the TV show Silver Kings will join the 2016 Belize Tarpon Tagging Expedition, to be held August 13-20, at El Pescador. Participants in the expedition help to catch satellite tag tarpon and gather data on migration patterns.

TV Show “Silver Kings” Joins 2016 Belize Tarpon Tagging Expedition Team

In it’s fifth year, The 2016 Belize Tarpon Tagging Expedition will occur this August 13-20. The expedition will be led by the University of Miami’s Dr. Jerry Ault, internationally renowned Marine Biologist, Director of the Tarpon and Bonefish Research Center and Fieldworker’s Club founding member, Adam Marton. Headquarters for the expedition will be El Pescador . This year the expedition team will be joined by the crew of the hit TV show Silver Kings.

The ultimate goal of the expedition is to catch, land, place satellite tags and safely release the tagged migratory tarpon. The satellite tags enable scientists from the University of Miami to study behavior patterns and collect factual data about where these long-lived, migratory fish travel to after they are tagged. The hope is the data collected will unlock some of the secrets of the migration patterns and regional connectivity of this specific population of tarpon. The long- term goal is to one day be able to provide this fact based data to resource managers and government officials from all over the world so they can make even more intelligent decisions about how to successfully manage the fisheries resource for generations to come.

The 2015 expedition was made up of nearly 20 anglers from around the USA. Three tags were deployed. In 2014 one tag was deployed. In addition to fishing, the 2016 expedition will include daily how to fly rod for tarpon skill building workshops and seminars on the science of tarpon research.

It is our hope that this expedition will prove to advance the world’s understanding of global tarpon behavior and provide valuable fact based information to resource managers and government officials across the planet as they make decisions moving forward. The successes of this expedition and others like it are the by-product of a critical partnership between anglers and scientists.
