Cuba Flats Fishing: Zapata Swamp National Park

July 2, 2012 By: Gus Delaporte

Cuba offers some the best flats fishing in the Caribbean, if not the world—if you can get there. In Garden and Gun, Charles Gaines describes his trip to Zapata Swamp National Park. What the location lacks in land-based amenities it makes up for on the water. The park hosts one of the most varied and pristine saltwater fisheries in the world. It is home to  bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, jacks and more.

Despite the blue ribbon fishing experience, Gaines laments the fact that unspoiled Zapata Swap will likely be developed by hotel chains and businesses once the U.S. trade embargo with Cuba is eventually repealed. Though for many American anglers, it may be the only chance they get to experience it at all.
