Fly Fishing Guide Hooks Hedge Fund Titan

July 1, 2012 By: Erin Block

While clients may indeed often offer you things, as fly fishing guide Oliver White says, a box of investing books is generally not one of them. However, it was just the case when hedge fund manager Bill Ackman won a trip to Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego Lodge; and being so impressed with White, offered him that box of books which led him to achieving hedge fund analyst status at Ackman’s firm in New York City and an M.B.A. at Harvard Business School. While it might sound like a fish out of water, White fit right in, Ackman says. “After all, what we do here is really just fishing, too.”

However, soon missing the flats, White put the skills he’d learned in the financial sector to work in getting back to his roots: purchasing Abaco Lodge and investing in lodge company Nervous Waters. “I want to make some money,” White says. “But it’s about the lifestyle, too. I really like not wearing shoes.”  Read Monte Burke’s story about White and Ackman in the July issue of Forbes magazine.
