Wisdom from the Past: Fred G. Shaw

The Complete Science of Fly Fishing and Spinning, by Fred Shaw, is full of timeless wisdom, but perhaps most entertaining part is Shaw’s chapter on axioms.  Here are just a few examples, most of them just as relevant today as they were in 1920:

“The dry fly fisherman… has a rule, only one opportunity at each fish, and it is with him that the making or marring of that chance rests.”

“The best fisherman in my opinion is he who nets most fish, and who kills or injures the least.”

“Always be charitable: never discredit a reputed trout stream because you have been unlucky on one or two occasions.”
