Snagged on the Backcast: A 2011 Retrospective
Art over rivers, people we won’t easily forget, ever-lighter graphite rods, some great fishing (some bad), and the usual laughter and bickering in between. Before we send off 2011, here are some articles and stories that you may have missed but that are worth another look.
- “Hair Extenders Corner Hackle Market” – A rabid interest in hair extensions makes fly tiers wonder if the good old days of cheap hackles are forever gone.
- “Tarpon Actually Smallmouth Bass” (Fool’s Day Funnies) – Scientists begrudgingly admit that tarpon are actually a type of smallmouth bass.
- “MidCurrent‘s 2012 Fly Fishing Gear Guide” – More than 140 brands and 160 products to wet your appetite for new gear.
- “Fly Shops and Undead Typewriters” – The closing of Kaufmann’s — a virtual institution in the U.S. northwest — has a lot of loyal customers scratching their heads, but not so many industry insiders.
- “A Passion for Tarpon” – In this excerpt from “Passion for Tarpon”, legendary tarpon guide Steve Huff is interviewed by Andy Mill (whose list of angling accomplishments are nothing to blink at).
- “Interview: Tyler Befus” – Two books, 30 species, multiple articles, 12 years old. ‘Nuff said.
- “Video: Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit ‘Fly Fisher’” – Fly Fishing and swimsuit models.
- “Billy Pate Dies” – The trail blazing saltwater fly angler passed away on April 18, 2011.
- “‘River Runs Through It’ Actor Arnold Richardson Dies” – The actor of perhaps the most memorable scene in A River Runs Through It, passed away.
- “Will the Jackson River Become Privatized?” – A court case whose results could have enormous impacts for access and privatization in the U.S.
- Dick Talleur Dies – The long-time fly tying writer and columnist died on February 28.
- “Angling Trade: ‘Costco Playing Dirty’” – One of the more curious stories of the year, it highlights the behind-the-scenes economics surrounding fly fishing.
- “Sylvester Nemes Dies” – The author and champion of the wet fly died on February 3.
- “Sage Aims to Redefine Casting Accuracy, Unveils ‘The One’ Fly Rod” – Sage unveiled “The One” at the IFTD in August to much hoopla.
- “Stan Bogdan Dies” – When we spoke to Stan Bogdan in 2010, he told us he would die “with dirty hands and in front of the lathe.”
- “Bear Encounter: A Personal Account” – John Stiehl gives his first-hand account of the bear attack his friend fly shop owner Rich Paini suffered last fall.
- “Christo Gets Go-Ahead to Drape Fabric Over Arkansas River” – Despite many months of vocal opposition by conservationists, anglers and fly-fishing guides, the artist gets permission to cover portions of the Arkansas with fabric.
- “On Steve Jobs and Fly Fishing” – When fishing seems to bring only failures, it might be time to channel one of the most successful CEOs ever and his thoughts on success (and failure).
