Podcast: How to Get Into Fly Tying

November 21, 2010 By: Marshall Cutchin

Tom Rosenbauer’s latest podcast, on getting into fly fishing, starts with a message from a daughter to a father that every fly-tying parent should hear. And before offering a bunch of tips on actually starting to tie, he says that the notion that fly tying requires great dexterity is a wives’ tale.
“You don’t need a lot of patience. I’ve been fly tying since I was nine or ten years old. I’m not a patient person. I don’t have particularly nimble fingers. You don’t need small hands. You don’t need any special skills at all. Basically, if you can hold a pencil or tie your shoe, you can tie a fly.”
