Our story a few weeks ago on the effectiveness of bear spray elicited lots of comments and questions, so we decided to respond to yet another inquiry on fishing around bears. Todd S. from New York City asked “How can you tell the difference between a bear that’s minding its own business and one that’s going to be a problem?”

Phil Monahan, who’s spent plenty of time on the ground in Alaska, describes bear behavior that might lead to a confrontation.
