FDA Opens Hearings Genetically Modified Atlantic Salmon

Virtually every major news outlet covered the FDA review of genetically modified salmon that began this week. The fish in question, by the way, are Atlantic salmon that have been genetically doctored to include the gene from an ocean pout — something that allows them to use Chinook salmon hormones to continue growing at an astonishing rate.
“Ron Stotish, Chief executive of AquaBounty, said at Monday’s first of two days of hearings that his company’s fish product is safe and environmentally sustainable. Food and Drug Administration officials have largely agreed with him, saying that the salmon, which grows twice as fast as conventional ones, is as safe to eat as the traditional variety.” From CBS/AP.
