In Michigan, Fly Fishers Want Gear Restrictions Extended

A draft proposal that would prohibit live bait fishing on at least 45 more miles of Michigan rivers is drawing a positive response from fly fishers and guides — who want the restrictions extended to parts of the Pere Marquette — while bait and tackle shops oppose it. “Dorothy Schramm, founder of Flygirls of Michigan and a well-respected fly fishing instructor from Pentwater, favored gear restrictions on the lower river to help reduce mortality and improve the fishing experience. ‘I’ve introduced over 1,000 women to the sport of fly fishing,” Schramm said. ‘We find we’re much more comfortable and feel safer fishing where there are gear restrictions.'” Howard Meyerson on MLive.com.
