Report: Flies, Leaders Are Most Popular Purchase

June 9, 2010 By: Marshall Cutchin

As we perused more results of the Southwick Associates April 2010 Angler Survey, a couple of tidbits caught our eye:

  • By far, flies and leaders are the most common purchase among anglers, both bought by about 50% of anglers, whereas fly rods and fly reels have made up around 20% of purchases this year. Waders and wading boots are both below 5%.
  • Of those who’ve bought flies, nymphs and dries made up about equal portions of their purchases — just over 30%. Saltwater flies make up less than 2% of total purchases among anglers in the suryey.
  • And virtually no fly tiers have been buying vises. They’re spending their money on tweezers, hair stackers and magnifying lamps.
