World Youth Fly Fishing Championships Coming to State College
August 1, 2007 (State College, Pa.) – For the first time in the history of the event, the World Youth Fly Fishing Championships will be held in the United States. From August 3-10, youth competitors will battle it out on rivers and streams in State College, Pennsylvania. Cloudveil Mountain Works is the official apparel sponsor outfitting the U.S. team with waders, boots and vests.
“Cloudveil has always embraced the youthful spirit of fishing and it is great to see the world championships hosted on U.S. soil,” says Jeff Wogoman, Director of Marketing for Cloudveil. “We’re proud to have these up and coming anglers wearing Cloudveil products.”
The competition will be held on three blue ribbon trout streams and also feature a lake event. Spring Creek, Fishing Creek, and the Little Juniata are all legendary and challenging rivers in the State College area, ready to test the angling skills of boys from around the world.
England, Wales, France, Canada, Portugal, Italy, Spain, The Czech Republic and South Africa are all expected to field teams for the competition.
Each team consists of six anglers—five who compete, and an alternate. Beats of water are randomly drawn for five separate events and an angler has 2.5 hours on each beat to produce fish. Points are awarded for the number of fish caught and the size. FIPS Mouche, the world governing body for competitive fishing awards gold, silver, and bronze medals for the top three teams and also the top three individual finishers.
The U.S. Youth Flyfishing team is a non-profit organization that relies on the generous support of private and corporate donations. The team was selected by tryout and boys must be 14-18 in the year of competition to be eligible. John Wilson of Mountain Home, AR coaches the team. Kevin Reynolds of Harrisonburg, VA is the Team Manager and Walter Ungermann of West Barnstable, MA is the Team President.
The team is optimistic about their chances in PA after a 5th place finish in Moncao, Portugal in 2006 and high individual finishes by Mike Hemkens (9th) and Weston Reynolds (14th).
